How to Measure for Custom Cutouts

Getting your measurements right the first time means a perfect fit. Follow this guide before configuring your cutouts.

1

Always Measure from the Outside

All measurements for your cutouts must be taken from the outside (external) face of the glass, not from the inside of the tank. The lid sits on top of the glass rim — so your cutout dimensions need to match what the lid will see from above, not what you see looking down into the tank.

⚠️Measuring from the inside of the glass will give you a number that's too small — your light mount, cord, or fitting won't clear the cutout. Always hook your tape measure on the outside edge.

Hook your tape measure on the outer edge of the glass — this is your zero point for all measurements.

2

Measuring the Width

The width is how wide the opening runs along the edge of your tank — left to right across the side or back wall where the cutout will be. Measure the full width of whatever needs to pass through (light mount, cord, fitting, etc.) at its widest point.

💡Add ⅛" (0.125") of clearance to your actual measurement. If your light mount arm is 1.5" wide, enter 1.625" in the configurator. This ensures a clean pass-through without binding.

Measure the width of the cutout opening along the tank edge, then add ⅛" for clearance.

Width Formula

Your measurement + 0.125" = Width to enter

Example: 2" light mount → enter 2.125"

3

Measuring the Depth

The depth is how far the cutout extends inward from the edge of the lid — front to back across the rim. This is how much of the lid gets cut away so your light mount, cord, or fitting can exit. Measure from the outer edge of the glass to the back of whatever needs to pass through.

💡Add ⅛" (0.125") of clearance to your depth measurement as well. This gives your fitting room to move without scraping the edge of the cutout.

Depth Formula

Your measurement + 0.125" = Depth to enter

Example: 1.5" depth → enter 1.625"

Quick Reference

✓Measure from the outside (external face) of the glass
✓Add ⅛" (0.125") to both your width and depth measurements
✓Measure at the widest point of your fitting, light mount, or cord
✗Don't measure from the inside of the tank
✗Don't use the internal glass-to-glass dimension
